What is self storage and how does it work?

Self storage is a service offering flexible, do-it-yourself storage for business and domestic customers. We provide clean, dry, storage units access to which is available anytime during opening hours and by appointment out of hours. Your storage unit is locked with your own high security padlock ensuring that only you have access to your goods.

Why do I need my own padlock?

You need your own padlock to ensure that you are the sole key holder for your unit. The padlocks we use have keys that cannot be copied.

How much does it cost to store my things with you?

The cost of a storage unit depends upon the size required. We suggest that you check our Storage Guide or speak to a member of our staff to determine the optimum storage for your requirements. A price can then be quoted on the correct size unit. We have units ranging from 16 cubic metres to 36 cubic metres.

What can I store?

You can store almost anything in our units. The only exceptions are:

  • Living items such as animals & plants
  • Hazardous materials such as flammable liquids and explosives
  • Items that could decompose such as exposed foodstuffs
  • Unauthorised goods such as firearms etc.

Can I store motor vehicles like cars or motorbikes?

Yes you can - we even have ramps to assist you in getting the vehicle into the unit. All we ask is that the DVLA is notified via a SORN (standard off road notification), that the vehicle is drained of diesel or petrol and that the battery is disconnected and any alarm system is switched off or disabled.

What is included in the price - are there any hidden extras?

The price you are quoted by our staff includes your storage unit charge, rates, service charges, utility bills and maintenance costs. You will be provided with a high security padlock to secure your unit.

If the contents you are storing are particularly valuable we recommend purchasing contents insurance for your goods.

Do I pay weekly or monthly?

We invoice customers on a pro-rata monthly basis.

Do I have to give notice when I leave?

Not usually - all we need to know is your intention to vacate your unit - at this time a final invoice will be drawn up. Notice can be given in person, in writing, by fax, phone or e-mail.

How can I pay for my storage?

We accept the following payment options: cash, cheque, and standing order.

How often can I have access to my goods and how much does it cost for access?

We offer unlimited access to your goods during opening hours. Access is FREE at Scott’s for Storage.

Do I have to book a unit?

No, you can fill in your storage agreement today and move in immediately. However to be guaranteed a unit of a specific size on arrival it is advisable to book your unit in advance.

Can I move in today?

Yes, a member of our staff will fill in our storage agreement with you, (this takes approximately 10 minutes) and then you can move your goods in straight away.

What are your opening hours?

We are open 7 days a week - for security reasons we insist you please ring to make an appointment outside the usual office ours.

Are there any limitations on access?

No, once you become a Scott’s for Storage customer you will be offered access seven days a week.

Do I have to sign a lease?

No you don't, you sign a straightforward storage licence agreement prior to moving into your unit. The contract takes approximately 10 minutes to complete.

How do I get my goods to you?

You can bring your goods in your own vehicle if you have enough space. We have ample car parking and large loading/unloading areas at all of our units. Alternatively, we can recommend local van hire/removal companies to help with your transportation.

Do you do removals/van hire?

No, we are purely a self storage centre. However we will recommend approved local removal/van hire companies. We can also recommend removal services within the surrounding area or nationwide.

What is the smallest unit you have available?

Our smallest units are 16 cubic metres.

What is the largest unit you have available?

Our largest units are 36 cubic metres. These will comfortably hold the contents of an average 3-bedroom house.

Are all your units under cover?

No, but we do have a large number of different sized units in our warehouses. Alternatively, we also have a large number of 36 cubic metre units outside on hard standing.

Can I transfer to another unit if I find I have too much or too little space?

You are welcome to move to another size unit at any time depending on your storage requirements and availability.

Are the storage units heated?

Our units are not heated. However, we do find that the temperature within our units remains fairly constant. You have a choice of indoor or outdoor units, the indoor units will remain at a fairly constant temperature as they are shaded from the wind, rain and sun.

What sort of security do you have?

We have extensive security features including:

  • 24 hour recorded CCTV located both inside and outside the main buildings monitoring all entrances & exits
  • Dusk-till-dawn sodium floodlighting
  • 16 separate CCTV cameras
  • On site security 24-hours a day

What is the minimum time I can store with you?

Our minimum storage period is 1 week.

Once I have a unit how long can I stay?

You are welcome to stay for weeks, months, a year or for as long as you require.

Will you accept deliveries to my unit?

Yes, by arrangement we can hold a key to your unit and take delivery of goods for you. We sign for the amount of packages received but not for the contents as this would necessitate us opening your packages. This service is offered free of charge.

Is there someone at the store I can talk to should I have a problem?

There will always be a trained member of staff available 7 days a week during standard opening times.
